Milgard's moving glass walls are sold alongside its windows and often quoted on the same sheet, so buyers reasonably assume the warranty is the same. It is not. The AX650, AX450 and VX350 systems carry their own Lifetime Limited Warranty, effective for sales after August 1, 2024, and it is a leaner document than either the standard window warranty or the Full Lifetime upgrade. The terms on the frame and the finish are long. The terms on labor and transfer are absent.
What Is Covered, and For How Long
The mainframe is warranted for as long as the original owner owns the structure. Unlike Milgard's window warranties, that term is not tied to living in the home, so a commercial building owner or a landlord who bought the system new gets the same lifetime mainframe coverage as a homeowner. Standard insulated glass units are covered for twenty years against seal failure, the internal fogging or residue that obstructs vision; laminated and impact glass units get five. The anodized finish and factory paint are each warranted for twenty years, a longer finish term than Milgard offers on its painted vinyl windows. Components, which is where the rollers, locks, handles and interlocks live, are ten years. Screens are five. Weatherstripping, any electronic or motorized hardware, and corrosion of stainless steel hardware are one year.
What Is Not
Glass breakage is not covered. Neither is temporary thermal expansion or bowing of a panel in direct sunlight, a clause written for exactly the dark-framed, south- or west-facing installations these systems are bought for. The standard Milgard exclusions apply on top: installation that departs from Milgard's instructions, building settlement, condensation, field-applied films or sealant, aluminum in contact with concrete or treated lumber, wind-driven rain in high-wind events, and failure to operate and maintain the panels. On a multi-slide system that last one matters; the tracks and rollers need to be kept clear and the panels moved regularly.
Labor: Owner's Responsibility
The remedy is a repaired or replacement part. The document states that the owner is responsible for any and all inspection, labor and shipping costs, with no time-limited labor provision of the kind the window warranty offers. On a system whose panels can weigh several hundred pounds and stand ten feet tall, that is the clause to plan around. Removing a panel to replace a roller carriage or a failed glass unit is a two- or three-person job with the right equipment. Transfer: None
The warranty is not transferable to subsequent owners. The lifetime mainframe term ends when the original owner sells the structure, and the next owner has no Milgard coverage on the system. That is a genuine difference from the Andersen big door warranties we also sell, which pass owner to owner for the remainder of each term, and it belongs in the comparison if a sale within ten years is likely.
Older AX550 Systems
Milgard's current document does not name the AX550, which it sold from 2017 until the AX650 replaced it in 2024. Those systems are governed by the Moving Glass Wall Systems Limited Warranty effective August 1, 2017: ten years on workmanship and materials from the date of shipment, insulated glass seal coverage for the life of the product, no labor, no transfer, an exclusion for glass installed above 5,000 feet without capillary tubes, and a specific disclaimer that flush sills are not designed to stop water intrusion in wind-driven rain. Frequently Asked Questions
Why is the moving glass wall warranty different from Milgard's window warranty?
Because it is a different document. Milgard's window and patio door warranties, standard or upgraded, do not apply to the AX650, AX450 and VX350 moving glass wall systems, which carry their own Lifetime Limited Warranty effective for sales after August 1, 2024. The frame is covered for as long as the original owner owns the structure, glass and finish for twenty years, components for ten. Two things the window warranties offer are missing here: there is no labor coverage at any point, and the warranty does not transfer to a later owner.
