What These Moving Glass Walls Actually Are

Milgard's moving glass walls are its answer to the indoor-outdoor living wave that hit Idaho's view lots and new-build subdivisions over the last decade: multi-panel aluminum door systems that stack, disappear into a wall pocket, or fold like an accordion to open most of a room to the patio.

The current product is the AX650, launched in August 2025. It replaced the AX550, which Milgard sold from 2021 until the last orders closed on August 4, 2025. If you bought a Milgard glass wall in the Treasure Valley in the last four years, it's almost certainly an AX550, and the two systems are close cousins — same thermally broken aluminum construction, same three operating styles, same 5-foot-wide by 10-foot-tall panel ceiling. The AX650 adds a bi-parting stacking layout (panels meeting in the middle and sliding to both sides), bi-folds rated to DP50, and a revised finish palette. Milgard now redirects the old AX550 web address to the AX650 page.

Both sit above the vinyl VX350 and aluminum AX450 in Milgard's lineup, and both are aluminum by design: only an aluminum stile can carry a 50-square-foot glass panel while staying about 3 inches wide. The frame is thermally broken — a non-metal spacer separates the outdoor and indoor halves of the extrusion — which is what makes the numbers below possible.

Pocket widths exclude the pocket itself, which has to be framed into the wall — meaning pockets are a new-construction or major-remodel product, decided at the framing stage, not a swap into an existing opening. Stacking systems are the retrofit-friendly choice. Bi-folds on the AX650 hang from top-load hardware with 3-3/16-inch stiles; stacking panels ride 1.81-inch rollers and lock with a two-point stainless adjustable lock. Finishes on the AX650 are white, warmtone, bronze anodized, and satin anodized, matched inside and out.

The Numbers That Matter

Milgard publishes NFRC-rated glass packages for the AX650 rather than a broad range, which makes this easy to state plainly. With Cardinal LoE-366 and argon, stacking and pocket systems rate U 0.31 / SHGC 0.22; add the i89 fourth-surface coating and they improve to U 0.27 / SHGC 0.21. Bi-folds run a touch better at U 0.30 / 0.20 and U 0.27 / 0.19. Milgard states the i89 package can meet ENERGY STAR requirements in all four climate zones; we verify that against the label on your specific configuration rather than take it on faith.

For context, a 0.27 U-factor on a 15-foot wall of glass is a genuinely good result — it's within a few hundredths of Milgard's own vinyl windows. The physics still applies, though: aluminum conducts heat faster than wood or fiberglass, so on a zero-degree night the interior frame surface will be cooler than a clad-wood door's, and homes that run humid in winter (lots of houseplants, no bath fans running) can see condensation form at the frame edges before it would on wood. Snow, Ice and the Track

Idaho's climate zone 5B is what separates a glass wall that delights from one that annoys. Three rules we install by. Put the opening under cover if at all possible — a covered patio or deep eave keeps snow from drifting against a flush sill and keeps meltwater out of the track. Choose the mid-height sill on exposed, north- or east-facing openings where snow lingers into March. And plan the slab: a heated or at least sloped, well-drained patio surface outside the door means the track isn't a trough of ice in January. Keep the track swept in winter; grit and ice are what kill roller bearings.

Where It Fits in Idaho — and Where It Doesn't

The AX650 is the right call for view homes on the bench edges and in the foothills, for new builds designed around a patio room, and for remodels where a clean, minimal-frame modern look matters more than the warmth of wood. It's also the value pick among the three big-door families we install: for the same opening, it generally comes in under Andersen's MultiGlide or Marvin's multi-slide.

It isn't the answer everywhere. Beyond 20 feet or 10 feet tall, you've outgrown it. A traditional or craftsman elevation, or a North End design-review board, will want the clad-wood look. And if you keep the house cold at night and wet in the bathrooms, a fiberglass or wood-interior system will be more forgiving of condensation. Warranty and Service, Locally

The AX650 (along with AX450 and VX350) carries Milgard's Moving Glass Walls Lifetime Limited Warranty: mainframe for as long as the original owner keeps the home, insulated glass 20 years, anodized and painted finishes 20 years, other components 10 years, screens 5, weatherstripping 1. It covers parts and is not transferable; labor is the owner's responsibility under the manufacturer terms, which is exactly why buying from an installer with its own crews matters. Frequently Asked Questions

Is the AX550 discontinued, and can you still service mine?

Yes. Milgard took the last AX550 orders on August 4, 2025 and ended production later that month; the AX650 replaced it the next day with comparable features plus bi-parting stacking and higher-rated bi-folds. Existing AX550 systems are still covered under their original warranty terms, and our crews still adjust rollers, replace weatherstrip, and order parts for them out of Garden City.

What does a Milgard AX650 moving glass wall cost installed?

Most Treasure Valley AX650 projects land between about $10,000 and $25,000 installed depending on panel count and configuration — a three-panel stacking door over a 12-foot opening at the low end, a four-panel pocket system at 20 feet toward the high end. Pocket walls cost more because of the framing they need. Structural header work, if the opening is being enlarged, is quoted separately. Firm numbers require a site visit.

How does the Milgard AX650 compare to Andersen's big doors?

Different material tier, different budget. Andersen's MultiGlide and Liftslide systems are clad-wood or Fibrex, run warmer on the interior in winter, and scale to larger openings, at a meaningfully higher price. The AX650 is thermally broken aluminum with the narrowest sightlines of anything we sell, capped at 20 feet wide and 10 feet tall, and typically comes in well under an equivalent Andersen. We install both and will put the two quotes side by side.

Should I choose the low sill or the mid-height sill in Idaho?

Pick based on how exposed the opening is. The flush low-profile sill is the barefoot-friendly option and belongs under a covered patio or a deep overhang where snow can't drift against the track. If the door faces open sky — especially north or east where snow lingers — the mid-height sill gives you a real weather dam, and you'll still want a heated or well-drained slab so the track doesn't ice up in January.
