A bifold door does something a sliding door cannot: it clears the entire opening. Fold eight panels to one side and a great room becomes a covered porch with nothing standing between the kitchen and the patio. The Series 9200 is All Weather Architectural Aluminum's folding system, and it is the door we show a homeowner who has seen a folding glass wall in a magazine and wants to know what it takes to build one in Boise.
What It Is
Top-hung folding panels in thermally broken 6063-T6 aluminum, 2⅜ inches deep with 2 1/16-inch stiles and rails, running on European folding hardware. Inswing or outswing, with up to eight panels folding in each direction, plus standard and inverted 90-degree corner configurations that let two walls open together. Panels run 24 to 42 inches wide and 25 to 144 inches tall. The same system builds a bifold window, the servery-style pass-through over a kitchen counter to an outdoor bar. Glazing is 1-inch dual-pane with Cardinal or Vitro Low-E coatings, tempered as standard, with simulated divided lites at ⅝, ⅞ or 1 inch and true divided lites at 2 15/16 inches.
Three sills: a ¾-inch recessed sill for a flush floor transition, a 1½-inch recessed, and a 2 3/16-inch weeped sill for exposure. Handles are the Aria, Acacia, Summit and accessibility-compliant Verona. A 10-inch kick rail is available. Finishes are Class I clear and dark bronze anodized, Kynar paint on order, and, unique to the 9200, powder-coat finishes in clear and black anodized effect.
What Is Tested, and What Is Not
The 9200 is rated PG45 and is NFRC certified. That is the published performance data. All Weather does not publish a whole-unit U-factor, a sound rating or an impact rating for the bifold, and we are not going to invent one. A folding door's performance depends heavily on panel count and configuration, and the honest way to specify it is by glass package: Solarban 70 or LoE-366 dual-pane with argon, carried in the whole-house energy calculation at a conservative value. If your project needs a door with a U-factor on the label, the Series 8150 slider is the All Weather door that has one.
The PG45 rating is worth a moment. It is higher than the Series 8100 multi-slide's PG30, and the reason is mechanical: a closed bifold compresses gaskets along every stile, where a sliding door relies on interlocks. A bifold is a tighter door when it is shut and a completely open wall when it is not.
Where It Fits in Idaho
A folding wall is a summer product in the Treasure Valley, and it should be sized like one. It belongs on the patio side of a modern home with a covered outdoor room, where the owners will actually fold it open sixty evenings a year, and on a kitchen wall as a bifold window to an outdoor counter. Corner configurations suit a great room that meets the yard on two sides. Matched Series 6100 windows and a Series 7000 entry carry the aluminum vocabulary around the rest of the house.
Where we steer people elsewhere: a north-facing wall that will be closed nine months of the year, where a Series 8150 slider with a published 0.30 U-factor is the more honest choice; a project that wants wood interiors, which points to Andersen's folding doors or Marvin's Scenic bifold; and any opening wider than the budget for a serious header, because a top-hung bifold hangs its entire weight from the framing above it.
Installation, Warranty and Service
That header is the first conversation on any bifold. The framing above the opening carries the panels and has to be engineered for it, the sill has to be dead level or the panels will not meet, and the folding hardware needs adjustment after the house settles through a winter. Frequently Asked Questions
Bifold or multi-slide: which All Weather door should I choose?
Bifold if you want the whole opening clear and do not mind a stack of panels standing at one or both ends; multi-slide if you want panels to disappear into a pocket or slide behind a fixed lite and do not need every inch of the opening. The Series 9200 folds up to eight panels each direction and turns standard or inverted 90-degree corners, and a closed bifold seals tighter, at PG45 against the 8100's PG30. The Series 8100 pockets, stacks flush, and carries panels up to 96 inches wide against the 9200's 42. Bifolds also come as servery-style bifold windows over a kitchen counter, which the multi-slide cannot do. We put both on the drawing and let the floor plan decide.
What is the energy performance of the Series 9200?
All Weather does not publish a whole-unit U-factor, STC or impact rating for the 9200; it is NFRC certified and rated PG45, and that is the published data. That is not unusual for a folding door, where the rating depends heavily on panel count and configuration, but it means we cannot quote you a label number the way we can on the 6100 windows or 8150 slider. We specify the glass package, typically Solarban 70 or LoE-366 dual-pane with argon, and we carry the assembly in the whole-house calculation at a conservative value. If a specific U-factor is a code requirement for your project, the 8150 slider is the All Weather door with the number behind it.
How is a bifold door installed and serviced?
Carefully, and by people who do it often. The 9200 is top-hung, so the header carries the full weight of the panels and has to be engineered for it; the sill has to be level to a small fraction of an inch or the panels will not meet; and the European folding hardware needs adjustment after the house settles through its first winter.
