Kolbe Warranty Explained: 30-Year Finish, 20-Year Glass, 30-Day Notice

Terms below are taken directly from the manufacturer's written limited warranty. All periods run from the date of purchase from the retailer or dealer.

Kolbe publishes two warranties for the products we sell. One six-page document covers the Heritage Series, Ultra Series, VistaLuxe WD Line and Forgent Series together; a second, near-identical document covers the all-aluminum VistaLuxe AL Line. Both were rewritten recently, the main document in November 2025 to split the finish coverage into AAMA 2604 and 2605 classes, and the AL Line document in March 2026. Both start the clock at the date of shipment from Kolbe's plant in Wausau, not the day the windows go in, and both carry a thirty-day written notice requirement that is stricter than any other manufacturer we carry.

The Ten-Year General Warranty

Kolbe's base promise is that its products are free from defects in workmanship and materials that would render them unserviceable or unfit for ordinary use for ten years from shipment. That covers frames, sash, hardware mechanics and everything not given its own term elsewhere. Several parts do get their own, shorter terms: weatherstripping, screens, electronic hardware, motorized accessories and window opening control devices are two years, retractable screen operation is five, and doors with flat or raised panels are one year unless they are Ultra Series doors, which keep the full ten. Door warp is not a defect until it exceeds a quarter inch on panels up to seven feet or three-eighths of an inch on taller panels, and Kolbe may wait twelve months before ruling on a warp claim.

Glass: Twenty Years on the Seal, Glass Only

Insulated glass under 60 square feet is warranted for twenty years against visual obstruction from a failed seal, and Kolbe's remedy is stated plainly: replacement glass only, free of charge. Units 60 square feet and larger get ten years under the main document; under the AL Line document they carry whatever warranty Kolbe's glass supplier provides, listed on the quote. Non-tempered glass is covered against stress cracks for five years. True divided lite glass, the small individual panes on a Cutlite grille pattern, gets two years on the seal and nothing on stress cracks. Specialty glass over 70 square feet, colored, bent, art or electrochromic glass passes through the supplier's terms. Minor imperfections in the large panels used on lift-and-slide, multi-slide and folding doors are explicitly not defects.

The altitude clause has two thresholds. Dual-pane glass without capillary tubes is excluded above 5,000 feet; triple-pane without tubes is excluded above 3,500 feet. Boise and the valley floor are under both. Idaho City, Cascade and Donnelly are above the triple-pane line, and McCall, Ketchum and Stanley are above both, so mountain orders are specified with tubes. Kolbe does not warrant the argon percentage at any time and notes that gas dissipates faster through tubes.

Finish: Where Kolbe Beats Most of the Field

This is the section that earned Kolbe its reputation. AAMA 2605 finishes on aluminum exteriors are warranted against cracking, checking or peeling for thirty years, fully for the first twenty and then prorated, with Kolbe paying 60 percent of the part cost in years 21 to 23, 30 percent in years 24 to 27 and 5 percent in years 28 to 30. Fade beyond seven delta E and chalking beyond an ASTM rating of six are covered for twenty years on both 2605 and 2604 finishes, and 2604 gets twenty years against cracking and peeling. Anodized exteriors are ten years. Forgent's acrylic exterior film is warranted against fade for twenty years, fully for ten and prorated after.

Wood exteriors follow a different path. The K-Kron II topcoat on Heritage and other painted wood exteriors resists cracking, peeling and flaking for ten years and holds color within five delta E for five, excluding failures from joint separation or substrate movement. Factory interior stain or paint is five years against the film cracking, checking or peeling. Primers are not warranted at all: bare or primed exterior wood needs two coats of a quality topcoat within sixty days of delivery, interior within ninety.

Wood Decay and the Coastal Clause

Treated wood in Ultra Series and VistaLuxe WD products is warranted free from deterioration caused by fungal decay or termite damage for twenty years. Heritage Series wood gets ten. Hardware finishes are warranted only in high-salt areas and only on stainless, coated or Resista finishes; tarnish on brass and oil-rubbed finishes anywhere is normal wear. Products within 5,000 feet of a shoreline are covered against adhesion loss and corrosion for ten years only if they carry a 2605 finish or are Forgent.

Labor, Exclusions and the Thirty-Day Rule

Kolbe's remedy is to repair or replace the product or component, or refund the price Kolbe received for it. Removal, installation, finishing, refinishing and disposal are not included, and the 2025 document adds that labor and travel expenses are not covered. Replacement parts may differ from the originals and do not restart the coverage period. The exclusion list is long and includes several items specific to how a window is installed: field mulls and field finishes, missing sill pans where code requires them, installation within eight inches of grade or vegetation, synthetic stucco without engineered drainage, uncertified doors without multi-point locks, and door hardware not installed within ninety days. Custom products built to a customer's non-standard specification are provided as-is.

The claim rule is the one to remember. Written notice must reach Kolbe in Wausau within thirty days of discovering the defect, and the document says no warranty applies without it. Kolbe or its dealer then examines the claim and advises on disposition, and Kolbe is not liable for anything repaired or replaced without its prior written consent.
