Read the original

This page summarizes VELUX Limited Warranty (The VELUX Promise) (document XUS 20194-0526, revised effective for purchases on or after May 1, 2026). The manufacturer's document controls if anything here differs from it. Terms can change between revisions, so confirm the current version against your order paperwork.

A skylight is the one window in your house that faces straight up at the weather, so its warranty gets read more often than most. VELUX's is a single four-page document covering every residential and commercial product it sells in the United States, updated in May 2026. The product terms are straightforward. The No Leak promise, which is the part everyone remembers, has conditions worth understanding before the roofer cuts the hole.

Glass and Unit: Twenty and Ten

Insulated glass in VELUX's deck-mounted and curb-mounted unit skylights is warranted for twenty years against a material obstruction of vision caused by dust or film forming on the inside surface when the hermetic seal fails. The one carve-out is a seal that fails because the glass cracked or broke first; that is breakage, not seal failure, and breakage is an accident under the exclusions. Laminated glass in the same models adds a ten-year promise against cracking from hail, provided VELUX can verify the damage and the National Weather Service confirms hail at your address. Hailstones over two inches in diameter are excluded, as of the 2026 revision.

The skylight itself, whether a fixed or venting unit, a roof window, a modular skylight or a flat-roof base and glass top cover, is warranted free from defects in material and workmanship for ten years. So is the flashing. Acrylic and polycarbonate top covers, and acrylic unit skylights, drop to five years. Anything VELUX makes that is not named in the document gets ninety days, and so does any replacement part supplied under warranty.

Sun Tunnels, Motors and Blinds

Sun Tunnel tubular skylights split their coverage by part. The rigid reflective tunnel is warranted for twenty years not to splinter, yellow, darken, peel, blister or crack in a way that reduces its reflectivity. The Sun Tunnel product is ten years for defects, and the acrylic dome is warranted against yellowing on a measured scale: five years to a yellowness index under 4.0 and ten years to under 10.0.

Everything electrical and everything soft is five years: solar and electric operators, rain sensors, remote controls, photovoltaic panels, control systems and power supplies, venetian blinds, light-filtering and blackout shades, plus accessories like trim kits, safety screens, diffusers and light kits. Software is not warranted to be error-free, and corrosion inside electronics is excluded.

The No Leak Warranty, Read Closely

Section 1.G is the promise that sells skylights: no water will leak through the installed product or between it and the roof deck for ten years. It applies to a specific list. Deck-mounted FS, VS, VSE and VSS skylights with EDL, EDW, EDM, EKL or EKW flashing. Curb-mounted FCM, VCM, VCE and VCS skylights with ECL or ECW flashing. Sun Tunnel models TZR, TZRL and TZRQ with ECL or ECW flashing. Roof windows and flat-roof skylights are not included.

Then the conditions. The skylight must be the original installation, on a residential building, through one layer of properly installed roofing, and installed strictly in accordance with VELUX's instructions for that model and flashing. Curb-mounted units add more: the site-built curb has to match the outside dimension of the skylight, be secured to the deck, use adhesive underlayment and the related VELUX flashing, or the warranty does not cover the unit. Applying any adhesive or sealant to the skylight as part of installation voids the warranty outright. A leak is defined as liquid water passing through or around the product; condensation is not a leak. Re-roofing later without re-wrapping the skylight in VELUX adhesive underlayment and flashing, leaving a venting unit open in the rain, ice damming, and a wrong-sized rough opening all fall outside the promise.

When a covered leak happens, VELUX's remedy is to repair or reinstall, replace, or reimburse the cost of one reinstallation, capped at $1,000 per skylight. The homeowner is responsible for tarping and for mitigating water damage in the meantime.

Labor, in VELUX's Words

The product warranty gives VELUX four options at its sole discretion: repair the product free of charge for material and labor, provide a replacement free of charge, refund the purchase price, or take other measures. The next sentence is the one to remember: labor costs associated with the replacement of any VELUX product are not covered. Dismantling and reinstallation costs are excluded, specialty equipment like lifts and cranes is excluded, and if a claim turns out not to be covered, the homeowner can be charged for the service visit and the examination. Shipping of a replacement is free within the continental United States. Repairs and replacements do not restart the clock.

Exclusions and Claims

The exclusion list is long but reads as common sense for a roof product: installation contrary to instructions, breakage and crazing from accidents, ice and debris blockage, faulty roof construction, building movement, high indoor humidity, weathering, corrosive cleaners, wood rot from poor maintenance, film applied to the glass, and any repair attempted without VELUX's written authorization. Custom paint not applied by VELUX is out. Condensation and the water damage it causes are out.

Claims go to VELUX directly at 1-800-888-3589 or velux.solutions@velux.com, after your installer has looked at the problem. VELUX asks for your contact details, the model number, a description of the concern and what has been tried, and it triages by phone first so many issues are resolved without a site visit. If Wood Windows installed the skylight, call us at (208) 376-2200 and we start the claim, with our own crew doing whatever roof work follows.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the VELUX No Leak warranty actually require?

Six things, all of them in the document. The skylight must be one of the listed A21-series models, meaning FS, VS, VSE or VSS deck-mounted, FCM, VCM, VCE or VCS curb-mounted, or a TZR, TZRL or TZRQ Sun Tunnel. It must be installed with the matching VELUX flashing kit. It must be the original installation, on a residential building, through a single layer of roofing, and installed strictly to VELUX's instructions. Roof windows and flat-roof skylights are not on the list. Meet those conditions and VELUX promises no water will leak through the unit or between it and the roof deck for ten years, with reinstallation covered up to $1,000 per skylight. Applying sealant or adhesive to the skylight during installation voids the whole warranty on that unit.

Does VELUX cover labor?

It depends on which remedy VELUX picks. The document lets VELUX repair the product free of charge for material and labor, replace it, refund it, or take other measures, at its sole discretion. If it repairs, labor is covered at any point in the term. If it replaces, the labor to swap the unit is yours, and the document says so directly. The exception is the No Leak warranty, where reinstallation of one skylight is covered up to $1,000. Cranes, lifts and tarping are never covered. As the installer, we handle the roof work and tell you before we climb up whether the visit is billable.

Do I need a certified installer for the VELUX warranty?

No. The warranty document makes no mention of installer certification, and VELUX's own pages say the No Leak coverage applies no matter who installs the skylight, as long as the installation follows the instructions. Certification programs exist for installers, including VELUX's Skylight Specialist training, but they affect the installer's listing with VELUX, not your coverage. What does affect your coverage is the installation itself: a site-built curb that does not match the instructions, a missing adhesive underlayment, or a second layer of roofing all take a skylight out of the No Leak promise.

Is the VELUX warranty transferable?

The document does not say either way. Coverage belongs to the end user, defined as whoever owns the product and did not buy it to resell or install commercially, and every term runs from the original purchase date. In practice a buyer of your home can make a claim for the balance of the term with the original receipt, but VELUX does not use the word transferable, so we do not either. Keep the invoice; without it VELUX dates the warranty from the manufacture date instead.

How do I make a VELUX warranty claim?

VELUX asks you to contact your installer first to inspect, then to call VELUX customer service directly at 1-800-888-3589 or email velux.solutions@velux.com. Have your name, address and phone, the product model number, a description of the concern, and what has been tried so far. Do not attempt a repair or hire someone else to before VELUX authorizes it in writing, because unauthorized work voids the coverage. If Wood Windows installed the skylight, call us at (208) 376-2200 and we make that first call with you.
