Therma-Tru Door Warranty: Lifetime Terms, Finishing Rules, Tru-Defense

Terms below are taken directly from the manufacturer's written limited warranty. All periods run from the date of purchase from the retailer or dealer.

Entry door warranties are different from window warranties in one important way: the homeowner has homework. Therma-Tru's coverage is generous, lifetime on the fiberglass lines we sell, but it comes with finishing deadlines, a genuine-parts requirement, and a set of riders that change what you actually get. Here is the April 2025 document and its three riders, read the way a service department reads them.

The Lifetime Term, and What Lifetime Means

For Classic-Craft, Fiber-Classic and Smooth-Star, the door slab, panels, glass lites, hinges, multi-point lock mechanism, weatherstrip, sweep, sills, sill pans, screens and Tru-Guard composite frame are all warranted free from non-conformities in material and workmanship for the lifetime of the original residential owner. Lifetime is defined as continuing for as long as that owner owns and resides in the home. In a rental, a commercial building or a multi-family property the term is seven years from shipment instead.

Two categories are carved out of that promise. Hardware finish is purchased as-is on every line, so a tarnished handle set or a discolored hinge is not a claim. And wear items, meaning weatherstrip, corner seal pads, the door bottom sweep and the multi-point lock, are covered against defects but not against ordinary wear, which is what usually ends their life. The glass coverage is real: internal seal failure, insert slippage, a dead miniblind mechanism, or fog and dust in the sealed air space are all named defects.

The warranty applies only when the door system is entirely genuine Therma-Tru. A third-party frame does not void coverage on the slab, but any problem traced to that frame's rot, warp or swelling is excluded, and primed pine or oak jambs are never covered even when Therma-Tru supplies them. That is why we build our Therma-Tru systems on the composite Tru-Guard frame.

Finishing: The Deadline Most Owners Miss

Therma-Tru sells most doors unfinished, and the warranty makes finishing your responsibility. A fiberglass slab must have all six sides finished within six months of installation. If a genuine Therma-Tru door bottom sweep is properly installed, the bottom edge is exempt and five sides will do. Steel slabs must be finished within two weeks. Bare wood frame components should be primed and painted or stained within two weeks or before any weather exposure, and PVC lite frames, grained composite frames and door surrounds within 30 days. Smooth white composite frames and white Advanta lite frames need nothing.

The alternative is a factory-applied PrismaGuard stain or paint, applied by the distributor before delivery. It satisfies the finishing requirement on day one and carries its own rider: ten years against peeling, flaking, blistering, chalking and checking for the original owner, five years on Traditions steel, with a required cleaning every six months. Fade of five delta E or less is not a defect under either document.

What Transfers to the Next Owner

Classic-Craft is the standout. Therma-Tru labels it Lifetime with 1x Transferrable, meaning the original owner can pass the lifetime warranty to one subsequent owner, and it runs until that second owner no longer owns and lives in the house. Fiber-Classic and Smooth-Star are not transferable on their own. Ordered with a Tru-Guard composite frame, they qualify for a rider that gives the second owner ten years from the date they take possession, along with no-charge replacement of wearable components for the duration. Finishing warranties do not transfer under that rider. Steel doors never transfer.

Tru-Defense: Water Damage, With Conditions

The Tru-Defense rider is the reason to specify a complete Therma-Tru system rather than a slab in someone else's frame. When every component qualifies, including the composite profiled sill, seven-shape corner seal pads on inswing units, the dual-bulb sweep, Therma-Tru hinges and weatherstrip, an approved multi-point or ANSI Grade 1 or 2 lock, and a rain guard on outswing doors, Therma-Tru will reimburse the fair market value of other property damaged by water infiltration through the door, or the cost to repair it. The cap scales with the hardware and the installer: a latch and deadbolt without a sill pan pays up to $250, or $500 with a Certified Installer; a multi-point lock with a Therma-Tru sill pan pays up to $1,250, or $2,500 with a Certified Installer. The doubled figures require the printed proof-of-install form from a Therma-Tru Certified Installer, and the rider does not warrant that installer's workmanship.

Labor, Exclusions and Claims

Therma-Tru's remedy is to repair the component, ship a replacement to you or your dealer, or refund the lesser of what you paid or list price. Labor for removing, reinstalling or refinishing is excluded, as is freight to send a part back. The PrismaGuard rider is the one place labor appears: Therma-Tru pays the distributor to refinish a failed finish. Other exclusions are what you would expect on an exterior door: negligence, improper installation or storage, missing flashing or overhang, settlement, brick wash and stucco leach, aftermarket window film, condensation, thermal stress cracks, scratches not visible from four feet, and hinge or lock corrosion within five miles of salt water. Coastal use and a storm door do not automatically void coverage.

Claims start with the seller and installer. If Wood Windows installed the door, call (208) 376-2200 and we handle it. Otherwise Therma-Tru takes claims at 1-800-537-5322 or online, and asks for proof of ownership, the purchase date, photos of the issue, and a photo of the glass watermark or hinge stamp that identifies the door as genuine. Tru-Defense claims go straight to Therma-Tru and require prompt mitigation and evidence of costs.
