North of the interstate, 83651 holds the oldest housing in Canyon County's biggest city: the pre-war bungalow blocks fanning out from downtown Nampa's brick storefronts, the postwar ranchers that followed through the 1950s–70s, and the neighborhoods along the Karcher corridor west of them. Almost none of it was built with windows you'd want today — and unlike the newer end of Nampa, the problem here isn't worn-out vinyl. It's original equipment.
Three eras, three failure modes
The bungalows and four-squares (1900s–1940s). Single-pane wood, rope-and-pulley weights, glazing putty gone to powder. Beautiful houses losing heat through every sash. The right answer is nearly always full-frame replacement: we strip to the rough opening, repair what a century hid, and re-trim so the new window respects the old proportions.
The midcentury ranchers (1950s–1970s). This is aluminum-slider country. Those frames conduct cold straight through — stand next to one in January and you can feel it — and their single glazing does close to nothing. Going from these to any modern Low-E vinyl window roughly halves window heat loss, often better.
The patched-over houses. Plenty of 83651 homes got a cheap retrofit in the 1990s. Those units are now failing too — fogged glass, stiff sashes — so we're often the second replacement, done correctly this time.

If the sashes are sound and you love them, restoration is legitimate — but most we open up have rot in the sills and jambs that makes replacement the better spend. Clad-wood or well-proportioned vinyl in a full-frame install keeps the period look while finally giving the house insulated Low-E glass.
How bad are old aluminum-frame windows, really?
They're the coldest thing in the house. Aluminum conducts heat about a thousand times faster than vinyl, so a 1960s–70s frame in January is effectively a radiator running in reverse — frost on the inside track is common. Replacing them is the highest comfort-per-dollar project we do in north Nampa.
Is there parking and site room for crews on the narrow downtown blocks?
