What It Actually Is
A wine room enclosure is a glass partition with a job description: hold a small room at cellar temperature and humidity while making the collection the view from the dining table. Crystalia builds them from the same four systems it uses everywhere else — welded steel, aluminum or Kompas framing, or frameless glass — and then adds the parts a plain partition doesn't need: insulated glass units where the room is refrigerated, a continuous door gasket, and an automatic drop threshold that seals the sill when the door closes.
The glass is always tempered. In a refrigerated room it's an insulated unit — two tempered lites with an air space — because single glass between a 55°F cellar and a 72°F kitchen will sweat. Clear and low-iron are the standard choices; a frosted band or full frosting is available when the room doubles as a wall and you don't want the labels on display.

The front of a wine room is usually one of four things:

Swing doors seal best, which is why we push for them whenever the floor plan allows. Single and double (French) swing configurations are standard; hinges on the steel system include a hold-open function that's handy when you're restocking.
The mechanical side integrates with the glass rather than fighting it. Crystalia's enclosures are built to accept a through-wall or ducted cooling unit, a thermostat, and ventilation — and the manufacturer's own guidance is blunt: don't direct the A/C airflow at the partition. A cold blast on the inside of the glass is how you get fog on the outside of it.
Finishes follow the parent system: any RAL powder-coat color on steel, matte black or anodized on aluminum, and Crystalia's cast pulls or a welded bar on the door.
Where It Fits in Idaho Homes and Offices
Wine rooms show up in three places in the Treasure Valley. Under the stairs or in a former basement closet in 1990s–2000s Boise Bench and North End homes — small, often passive, a frameless front makes the space feel bigger than it is. Off the dining room or kitchen in new custom homes in the foothills and Eagle, drawn by the architect as a lit glass box — that's steel-front territory, and it's the room the builder photographs. And commercially, in restaurants and the tasting rooms of the Snake River Valley wine region, where a glass wine wall behind the bar is inventory and décor at once, and aluminum framing takes the daily wipe-down.
Idaho helps and hurts. Our basements are cool and our air is dry most of the year, which makes passive or lightly cooled rooms realistic and keeps condensation risk lower than in humid climates. But a glass room opening onto a great room with west-facing windows is fighting the same summer sun that room fights; keep the enclosure out of the direct beam, insulate the glass, and size the cooler for the glass area.
Where it doesn't fit: a room on an exterior wall with no insulation behind the racking, or a budget that only covers the glass. The glass is the visible part; insulation, vapor barrier, and the cooling unit are what make it a wine room. We'll say so at the first meeting.
Codes, Safety Glazing and Installation
Glass in and beside a door is a hazardous location under IRC R308 and IBC 2406, and everything Crystalia ships is tempered to ASTM C1048 with a permanent mark. Insulated units are tempered on both lites. A wine room built under a stair may also trigger stair-guard glazing rules; we check.
Installation is a sequencing job. The room gets framed, insulated and vapor-sealed by the builder; racking and cooling go in; then we set the glass front last, so nothing scratches it and the seals close against finished floor. We field-measure after the flooring is down — a drop threshold has to land on the actual tile — and Wood Windows employees do the install. The same crews set our shower enclosures, which is the closest cousin to this work: tempered glass, tight tolerances, and a seal that has to hold.

What does a glass wine room enclosure cost installed in Idaho?
The glass front is one part of the room. As a typical range, a frameless insulated-glass front with a gasketed swing door across a 6- to 8-foot alcove runs roughly $7,000 to $14,000 installed; a steel-framed French-door front with sidelites moves into the high teens and twenties. Racking, insulation, vapor barrier and the cooling unit are separate trades or separate lines. We coordinate the glass to the cooling contractor's spec rather than the other way around, because the glass is the biggest heat load in the room.
Do I need insulated glass, or will single tempered glass work?
It depends on whether the room is refrigerated. A passive cellar in a cool basement corner, held near cellar temperature by the ground, can take a single 3/8-inch tempered front like Crystalia's standard partitions. A conditioned room held at 55°F behind a great room at 72°F wants insulated units — two panes with an air space — or the inside face of the glass will sweat on humid days and the cooling unit will run constantly. Steel or frameless for the wine room front?
Frameless shows the bottles; steel frames the room. A frameless insulated front with a full-height swing door is the cleaner look and the less expensive one, and it seals well with a proper gasket kit. A steel French-door front is the showpiece — the choice for a tasting area off a dining room — but every muntin is a thermal path, so it wants a bit more cooling capacity. Aluminum and Kompas fronts split the difference and are what we spec for restaurant wine walls where budget and cleaning matter.
Why does the glass on some wine rooms fog up, and how do you prevent it?
Condensation forms where warm, humid house air touches a surface colder than its dew point. Single glass on a 55°F room will hit that point on any humid Idaho evening. Three things prevent it: insulated glass so the room-side pane stays warmer, a continuous gasket and automatic drop threshold on the door so cold air isn't leaking out at the sill, and — per Crystalia's own guidance — never aiming the cooling unit's airflow directly at the glass. Get those three right and the glass stays clear.
