What the E-Series Actually Is
The E-Series is Andersen's made-to-order line: a solid wood window wrapped outside in heavy-gauge extruded aluminum, built to the dimensions, color, species, and shape a specific project calls for. It did not start life as an Andersen product. Eagle Window & Door, an Iowa company that specialized in aluminum-clad wood, was acquired by Andersen in the mid-2000s and later folded into the Andersen Architectural Collection as the E-Series. Plenty of architects and builders still call it "Eagle," and plenty of Treasure Valley homes from the 1990s and 2000s have Eagle units in them that we service today.
Two construction details set it apart from Andersen's other clad-wood lines. First, the cladding is extruded aluminum rather than roll-formed sheet, so it is thicker, holds crisp corners, and can be finished to AAMA 2605 — the same spec used on commercial curtain wall. Second, a Fibrex composite thermal barrier runs around the interior perimeter of the frame between the aluminum and the wood, which addresses the classic weakness of aluminum-clad windows: metal conducting cold straight to the interior.
In the lineup it sits alongside the A-Series at the top. The A-Series wins on tested energy performance; the E-Series wins on freedom.
The Numbers That Matter
Because every E-Series unit is built to order, Andersen publishes its E-Series energy data primarily as center-of-glass comparisons and points buyers to NFRC total-unit ratings for the specific configuration being ordered. We do the same: we do not quote a blanket U-factor for this line, and the numbers on your quote will come from the NFRC label for your exact unit and glass package.
What we can say from the glass options themselves, which are shared with the A-Series and 400 Series:
- Low-E4 is the standard dual-pane package; Andersen rates it up to 44% more efficient in winter and 57% in summer than clear dual-pane glass.
- SmartSun blocks 95% of UV and cuts solar heat gain sharply while staying clear — our default for west and south glass.
- HeatLock is a room-side coating that reflects heat back inside and lowers the U-factor of any Low-E4 or SmartSun unit; on a high-glass elevation it is the cheapest efficiency you can buy.
- Triple-pane is available for projects chasing ENERGY STAR 7.0's Northern-zone 0.22 U-factor line.
- Laminated glass adds sound control and forced-entry resistance — useful along Chinden, Eagle Road, or near the airport.
Design freedom is where the E-Series numbers actually live: 50 standard exterior colors meeting AAMA 2604, all available in AAMA 2605, plus custom color matching and seven anodized finishes. Up to four exterior colors can be combined on a single unit. Interiors come in nine-plus wood species — pine, Douglas fir (mixed and vertical grain), oak, maple, alder, hickory, cherry, walnut, and mahogany — with Andersen offering to source others, finished in nine stains or painted options, or shipped unfinished. Standard double-hungs run to 4 feet wide by 7 feet 6 inches tall, and custom sizes are cut in 1/8-inch increments.
Where It Fits in Idaho — and Where It Doesn't
The E-Series is the window for the project the catalog cannot serve. Contemporary custom homes in the foothills and along the Boise River with walls of black or bronze picture units and direct-set trapezoids under a shed roof. Mountain and lake houses in the Cascade and McCall country where the owner wants alder or fir interiors to match the millwork. Designers matching a cladding color to a metal roof or a specific paint chip. Large mulled assemblies and radius-top units on a Tudor or Mediterranean elevation. Replacement of original Eagle units where the homeowner wants the same look and the same operation.
Where we steer people away: on a standard replacement, the E-Series' premium buys you flexibility you will not use, and the 400 Series or the Fibrex 100 Series will do the job for far less. If your goal is the lowest U-factor rather than a custom look, the A-Series is the better Andersen. And if a project is comparing aluminum-clad wood across brands, Marvin Ultimate and Kolbe Ultra are legitimate competitors we also carry; we will put all three on the table, because we have installed all three and know where each earns its price.
Warranty and Service, Locally
Andersen warrants the E-Series aluminum finish for 10 years against chalking and color fade and 20 years against cracking, checking, peeling, flaking, blistering, and loss of adhesion, with the standard Owner-to-Owner coverage of 20 years on glass and 10 years on non-glass components, transferable to the next owner.

Is the Andersen E-Series the same as Eagle windows?
Yes. Eagle Window & Door was an Iowa manufacturer of aluminum-clad wood windows that Andersen acquired in the mid-2000s and eventually rebranded as the E-Series within its Architectural Collection. If you have Eagle windows in a home built in the 1990s or 2000s, the E-Series is the direct successor, and we can source replacement sashes and parts through Andersen. How much does the Andersen E-Series cost?
It is Andersen's most customizable and most expensive window, and pricing is genuinely per project — Andersen itself lists it as quote-only. As a broad typical range, a standard-size E-Series opening installs at roughly 40–80% above a comparable 400 Series unit, and custom colors, exotic species, oversized units, and specialty shapes go up from there. Custom homes are priced opening by opening from the plans.
E-Series vs. A-Series — which one do I want?
The A-Series is the better performer: fiberglass and Fibrex exteriors, triple-pane on everything, and the lowest tested U-factors in the Andersen family. The E-Series is the more flexible product: 50 standard aluminum colors plus custom matching, seven anodized finishes, nine-plus interior wood species, and nearly any size or shape in 1/8-inch increments. Choose the A-Series when energy numbers and an architectural style lead; choose the E-Series when the design calls for a specific color, an unusual shape, or very large glass.
Can I get a custom exterior color on Andersen E-Series windows?
Yes.
